At lunch, I sit with a wonderfully kooky, creative, smart group of Christian students. Our discussions and interests have a wide range, and vary in IQ depending on the subject and how much sleep we got the night before.
What I'm about to discuss is what came out of a conversation the Other Aaron and I had at lunch today regarding, surprise-surprise, Star Wars. I wouldn't have thought anything of it, but he looked quite struck by what I said, so I'm recording the gist of it here, in case it's important/striking to anybody else.
The Other Aaron was enumerating the issues involving the Light Side, the Dark Side, and how the Gray Jedi (an Expanded Universe concept) are the perfect medium. Here's what came out of our discussion:
The Sith are powered by revenge and hate. Although they (as an organization) exhibit patience and sacrifice for a cause larger than themselves (every Sith Lord takes an apprentice knowing that the apprentice will one day turn on them), it is hatred and revenge that drive them.
The Jedi, in response, went to the other extreme. Like the Vulcans in Star trek, they decided that the best way to deal with the threat of anger, revenge, and bitterness was to get rid of emotion/emotional attachment entirely - not unlike a certain cousin's Apathy Shield. But this is not a stable foundation, and (imo) part of why the Order was declining in the years leading to the Clone Wars. Heart-lessness doesn't work.

Somewhere, somewhere lies a heap,
Full of things I'd like to keep.
An ancient sword, a slender stick,
A hobbit’s long-lost handkerchief.
A glittering key, a diamond flask,
Loving echoes from a past,
I know but have not lived.

This is (well, was) an oral piece I came up with late at night off the top of my head to entertain my brother (and myself). It's not the best writing...but hopefully its absurdity will make you laugh
Once upon a time there was a duck named Ferdie who lived in a pond. Ferdie had a flamethrower that he used to take potshots at squirrels that came nearby. Ferdie's aim could use a little bit of work. All the animals at the pond were terrified of Ferdie and his flamethrower because he never actually hit the squirrels, just everything else. Finally one day, Jeremy the bullfrog decided to do something about it. Jeremy got his friends, the carp, to agree to help him carry out his audacious plan. Not that the carp cared about Ferdie and his flamethrower, because they lived under water, but they owed Jeremy a couple of favors. Now, everyday when searching for food at the bottom of the pond, Ferdie put his precious flamethrower on a log right smack in the middle of the pond, right next to Ferdie's favorite feeding grounds. So Jeremy got the carp to clear out all the pond weed from Ferdie's favorite feeding ground one night when Ferdie was fast asleep with his head tucked under his wing right next to his precious flamethrower. In the morning when Ferdie swam out to the center of the pond and placed his flamethrower gently on the sacred log, he discovered that there was no pond weed underwater, and he had to swim farther and farther out in order to get his food.
