The day is long,

exhaustion sets in

I need a break

A break from the stress,

A break from the work,

A break from my whirling thoughts.

There is nothing wrong

But I am hungry

And hunger increases stress

So off to the kitchen

Searching for something

To satisfy but not overwhelm.

But the chips are too salty

It’s too soon to make dinner

Cheese is great,

but takes too much thought

Opening and closing cupboards

There at the top almost hidden

Peanut butter, never opened

A moment to reach and the jar

is in hand, ready to use.

Two slices of bread and a knife

Spread evenly across one

Still, it needs something

A moment’s thought

strawberry jam’s the thing

It is cool and spreads

with lumps of strawberry

sweet to go with the salty

A plate for support

Plate in hand, sweet smelling

I sit and turn off the TV

A bite in silence

Teasing the pallet

Flavor explodes as my mind stills

With each bite the stress flows out

There is nothing like peanut butter

and jam to ease the cares of the day.
