Shades of gold and brown across the shoulders
And a head of gold
It perched atop a tall boulder
surveying the field below
Suddenly, seeing something I could not
a leap into the wind
wings outstretched,
catching the air. It soared
Leaning wings left or right
weaving among the boulders
and over the field, wings still
outstretched catching morning thermals
Rising air of the morning
giving lift to its flight till suddenly
wings collapse, it dives into tall grass.
Prey invisible, but breakfast found.

looked across the park,
seeking to escape the barking dog
and retreat to high grass

Once upon a time,
or so the story opens.
At least that’s what we say.
But is it really some imaginary
tale we tell ourselves to
make the reality speak more softly?
