Day full of blue sky

Golden sun under light clouds

And green, everywhere green

as if May, though it’s not

Beautiful, but worrying

Our walks, immersing us

in the wonder that is nature

are also frightening

Lady bugs and spiders

out and running on the sand

eating the green

and growing grass

a lizard sunning

since the beginning of February

hawks and jays well fed

dear shedding winter coats

They are beautiful and wondrous

But what if winter finally comes?

Has nature been fooled into preparing

for spring two months early?

While I marvel in the beauty

I fear what may happen if

winter makes a delayed appearance

what happens if we get no water

in this winter that’s not normal

Fires grow, becoming threats

crops don’t grow, hurting livelihood

and nature, now fat on the current bounty

knocking on death’s door this summer
