I woke with a line in my head

It could not be escaped

“Walking through fields of green.”

As a youth, I loved the smell

and hide and seek and new discoveries

Walking through fields of green

The other day I walked the headstones

Planting flags and sharing a moment with each

Walking through fields of green

Those buried no longer able

to share the sounds and sights

Walking through fields of green

They shed their lives, sacrificing all

that others, unknown, might find themselves

Walking through fields of green

Though they no longer walk,

they have consecrated the world

Walking through fields no longer green

Their sacrifice and their spirit now part

of the universe in the hope that we are

Walking through fields of green

In remembrance of them and the ideals

they fought and died for, we

Walk through fields of green renewed.
