A few days ago, an elderly neighbor passed away. Today, while my father and I were walking the dog, we saw the neighbor’s children pull up in front of the house. My father took it upon himself to express our condolences. In a moment where it could have felt very lonely for the family left behind, he extended a hand of friendship, and with those few words, he let them know that they weren’t alone.

I dare not underestimate the impact that my father may have just had. Not only did he do the right thing, he also set an example for me to follow. He let me know, with his actions not his words, that this is how our family behaves.

It is a good reminder to me, even as an adult.
