School year ending as full summer approaches

Students leap and cry for joy

freed from the responsibilities of learning

Not really for the summer is full

of adventures and learning, just not formal

Its touch gentle,

feather across skin

hints of lavender or mint

oaks and pines or fresh cut grass

Sometimes the scent of pie or bread

other treats both savory and sweet

Yesterday, bright with color

joy in learning

in sharing

in building

Sun, warmth and blue sky

conspire to build up the day

Accomplishments richer

Failures and frustrations smaller

less consequential.

As rain begins, the light remains

a spiritual thing.

Flowers blooming, grass growing

trees once barren suddenly with bud

souls lighter

energy easily found

days lengthening, steps lighter,

meeting tasks of the day.

Has courtesy died?

A question pondered by many

news people, politicians, celebrities

even the common among us
