Once upon a time,
or so the story opens.
At least that’s what we say.
But is it really some imaginary
tale we tell ourselves to
make the reality speak more softly?

It has been just seven months since my heart attack and everything else. During that time I was really not able to write creatively, until now. I don't know why, but it seemed as if the weight of circumstance worked against me, demanding I focus on other "things" and that I not force myself. It was (and is) a difficult challenge. But finally, today, creativity returned.
I don't claim that this simple poem is one of my best or even that it is mediocre. But, it is a poem of significance because I met the flower on a hike with Maya, getting me out and into nature. It stood high and proud and all by itself and spoke to me. So, I share with you, our readers

Recovery is challenging
So many changes as one struggles
medications, exercises, examinations
too many people, all concerned
then not enough

a short walk
getting longer each time
brings healing

This piece is a start of something. At the moment it is very rough and unfocused, but it is a start and will improve as I improve from the heart attack and stroke that is the start.

Things happen
Life creates choices
Outcomes good or bad
Perhaps unknown. The
choice forgotten
For the fortunate
life may present
an opportunity
a chance to change
direction
Choosing change
may be exciting
or terrifying
perhaps both
But when it comes…
Weigh the positives
and the negatives
consider what your
heart wants, even
consider changing your goals
If not certain
try a leap of faith
into an unknown
and uncertain
future
It is terrifying
it is exhilarating
Like life it has
ups and downs
More up than down
What it requires is
your passion
Hold it close
but share generously
new dreams can come true
