We saw the rabbits
hiding in the shadows
shaking when they noticed us
They have watched
and posed and allowed us
close for months, spring and summer
Now, they fear anything larger,
casting a shadow
even the protection of thickets and rocks
usually shelter from storms
now shelter from hunters is not enough
Autumn brings predators
hawks and eagles roam the sky
diving suddenly catching unwary prey
fox and bobcat and larger approach
by stealth pouncing and chasing,
overpowering smaller targets
Is it any wonder that they shake
and shudder while out,
foraging for sustenance and warmth
preparing for winter that cannot come too soon
when shelter hides away
and grants some peace
Yet imagine a life spent shaking
and hiding from those who would prey
is it the natural way, or can our smaller
friends be given more peace
without upsetting the natural order
