Gracefully gliding to a perch high above
hawk wheeling in a tight turn
to land surveying the field
predator seeking an easy meal
perfect vantage point, unreachable by most
but home to a small jay
season early, eggs not yet laid
yet a home under threat
suddenly a jay, much smaller dives
a fighter taking charge, defending
diving and pecking, quick and fierce
attacking with different angles, disorienting
confused at first, turning and twisting
not keeping up, unhurt but frustrated
high perch no longer an advantage
it takes to the sky, escaping the annoyance
only to have a second hawk dive
trying for the same excellent point
and perhaps a little revenge
with no success
the jay insistent, keeping its home safe
proved small, but mighty
a lesson for us all, the size of the spirit
is more important than the physical
