The day quiet, but not from caution
warm in the extreme for Colorado
muggy, almost damp,
as if a welcome change anticipated
clouds low, but not violent
heat building for the day
wild life seeking relief, but not sheltering
nothing immanent, just uncomfortable
the rabbit startled, but not running
instead focused on finding shade
and cool, moist rock, freezing for a moment,
aware, cautious, but not afraid
watching as we approached
calmly lying on damp, loose sand
spreading hind legs and flattening
full contact with cool ground
we stared at each other
respecting the choice
and courage of comfort
over possible predator, not advancing
